The Competing Bike Shop
that Does Not Measure the Customer
from "The Complete Guide to Bicycle Store Operations "
by Ed Benjamin (pg. 89-93) and published by Info Net Publishing
During the explanation of what the measuring process and bicycle fitting is
all about, take a moment to tell the following story:
"We are really enthused
about the success we get using our Fit Kit. Back before 1984,
when we bought our Fit Kit, we used to do it the old fashioned
way.
"We would stand the customer
over the top tube of the bike, step back, and tell them that it looked good.
"We were looking for an inch
or so of clearance over the top tube, and ignored every other factor.
"Back in those days, we had
about half of our customers complaining that the bike was uncomfortable. Well,
we thought about half of our customers were simply unsuited for bike riding.
"Now days - we will sell
about 3,000 bikes this year - only about 6 to 10 customers will complain that
their bike is uncomfortable. And we will be able to fix that problem for them."
Now tell them about our "Guaranteed
Fit," and pity the sales person at BikesBelowCost who tries to stand
them over the top tube and tell them it fits.
Our Motto: "One accurate measurement is worth more than
a thousand expert opinions!"
Main Street Bicycle "Guaranteed Fit"
Your comfort on your new bike is important to us. If you
are not comfortable, we are not happy with our sale.
Main Street Bicycle will modify or replace any bicycle
that the purchaser deems to be uncomfortable in the first 30 days of
ownership.
Bicycles must be in like-new condition, and the recommendations
of the sales person at the time of purchase must have been followed
in full concerning size, modifications, seat selection and set up.
If the bike cannot be made comfortable, Main Street Bicycle
will exchange it for another bike, or issue a refund.
