Speedplay '0' Adapter Plate

The Speedplay '0' Adapter permits the accurate and necessary alignment of the Speedplay '0' pedal cleat.

Prior to aligning the cyclist’s cleats, make certain the bicycle is secured in a stationary trainer or similar suitable device for holding the bicycle securely during the alignment procedure.

Level the bicycle in the trainer. Install the RADs and raise the saddle height to allow for the added height of the RADs — generally 1.5 to 2 cm.

Step 1: Install the Speedplay adapter into the Universal RAD adapter as shown at left and in turn the Adapter to the R.A.D.s.

Step 2: Install the Speedplay Cleat to the cycling shoe.

xx

xxStep 3: Center the 'spring tab' of the '0' cleat spring.

xx

xxStep 4: Allow the cyclist to mount the bicycle and pedal for a few minutes with no resistance on the trainer, to facilitate warm up of their cycling muscles.

xx

Note: The cleat should gently snap into place on the adapter.

Make the rotational adjustment with no resistance on the trainer. Observe the red and white determinant bars of the RADs while the cyclist is pedaling. The red determinant bar will indicate the direction the cyclist’s heel wants to be adjusted. This adjustment is accomplished by adjusting the cleat screws to allow the heel to move in the indicated direction being careful to keep the cleat spring tab captured between the adjusting screws.

Note: You are looking for and adjusting for predominant movement of the red bar. i.e., the direction the bar moves and stays, not the pulsing movement. This pulsing movement of the red bar either side of the white bar is indicating the amount of free float needed by the cyclist and is accommodated by backing the screws equally away from the cleat spring tab.

xx

Step 5: Tighten the cleat mounting bolts to secure the cleat so that it will not move during riding.

Remove the RADs from the bicycle, lower the saddle to its original height and re-install the client/ cyclist pedals.

Allow the client/cyclist to re-mount their bicycle and try several entry and exits in the pedals. Make certain the cyclist can enter and exit the pedals smoothly and safely. Listen carefully to the client's comments. These comments are valid and should always be taken seriously and will give you valuable opportunity to doublecheck your work.

Be patient with your first few adjustments as you learn to work with your new adapters. If you have any questions please feel free to call Fit Kit Systems.

WARNING!
The particular features and precautions for installing and aligning the Speedplay pedals and cleats can be found in the instructions included with your Speedplay pedals and cleats. These instructions should be read and followed and used in conjunction with these instructions and other materials found in the RAD Manual. Please use common sense and carefully listen to the client/cyclist while using these or any of the Fit Kit Systems products concerning bike fit and cleat positioning. Failure to do so or simply installing the cleats in an arbitrary fashion could lead to serious injury to the cyclist’s knee or premature and unwanted release from the pedals, resulting in serious injury or death. If you have any questions or concerns about the use of the RADs, Adapters, or procedures, please call Fit Kit Systems prior to using them.

"Arguably, the best way to make sure your cleats are properly adjusted for your pedal stroke is to go through a fitting with the Fit Kit's Rotational Adjustment Device™ (RAD)."
-- Patrick Brady, Bicyclist
